Clinical Protocols and the Electronic Health Record

1:25 PM–1:45 PM May 2, 2019 (US - Eastern)

Focus

Description

Clinical protocols allow for non-providers to perform actions delegated to them by providers due to clearly defined protocol processes and documents meeting regulatory requirements. An 11-hospital system’s high reliability journey is described focusing on improving integrity between policy documents and their operationalization in the electronic health record (EHR). Results include significant policy and EHR refinements, standardization, knowledge management incorporating policy and EHR operationalization, and innovative new protocols solving workflow issues of well-intentioned providers ordering inappropriately.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: The participant will be able to:
1. Explain CMS Hospital Conditions of Participation requirements around clinical protocols and how those can impact design choices in the electronic health record (EHR).
2. Describe organizational steps taken to optimize the clinical protocol process addressing the intersection of policy and EHR operationalization.
3. Describe key lessons learned related to operationalization of clinical protocols in EHRs.
