This presentation identifies challenges analyzing data collected from the secure messaging feature of an inpatient portal. Understanding the complexity of inpatient messages will guide future investigation in this nascent area. We compare this research area to outpatient portal messages, and to the social sciences literature on communication, providing insights into how to undertake research in this area while avoiding pitfalls.
