Description

Patient education delivered by a healthcare provider to a patient is essential to increase patient understanding and adherence to medical instructions and to assist with increasing the overall health of the patient. We conducted a mixed-methods pilot study of a multi-media patient education software tool inclusive of mobile devices, 3D and video based educational content, and integration with existing patient care workflow. Nurse patient educators and care coordinators (n=14) utilized the software on mobile devices to educate patients randomly assigned to study (3D/video instruction) and control (paper based instruction) groups (n=182). Nurse educators were interviewed to understand system usability, with the majority (>65%, n=14) finding the system to be helpful for enabling patient understanding; useful for enabling timely delivery of content; and generally conducive to existing patient workflow. Patients in the study group reported higher scores than the control group in terms of patient understanding, motivation for home self-care, patient empowerment (to make decisions on own and together with doctor), and likeliness to follow medical instructions (adherence). Integrated mobile 3D/video education software provided at bedside may be one important component of a comprehensive patient education strategy.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: The attendee will be able to: Understand patient education challenges as noted in the research literature and practice; Recognize current best practices in multi-media patient education methods and processes; Assess cloud/software based multi-media patient education tools for their potential impact; Integrate strategies for improving patient education that may lead to improved understanding, communication, self-care, and patient adherence.
