Description

Healthcare Hackathons have gained traction over the past decade. We present a novel case study of a modified 1-day pediatric resident hackathon event hosted at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Residents are the largest workforces in most academic institutions and rotate throughout the entire hospital, making them the most versatile and knowledgeable users of the electronic health record (EHR). They are also under-represented individuals in clinical informatics and overlooked in many hospital initiatives due to their time constraints. We demonstrate an example of a health IT focused hackathon that successfully brought residents and informaticians together to identify problems and generate solutions to improve resident workflow and patient care. It also has the potential to improve resident engagement in clinical informatics and decrease resident burnout.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: After attending this session, will be able to:
- Understand a novel approach for resident problem-solving and engagement in informatics
- Identify key features of a resident focused hackathon
- Identify examples of successful resident-led projects created during a focused hackathon
