Description

Web-based health portals help patients engage in their own care by allowing them to access their medical information, schedule appointments, manage their medications and communicate with healthcare professionals. Initial studies show that portal adoption positively affects health outcomes; however, given their relative novelty, only now have these portals collected sufficient usage information to allow for systematic explorations that assess how patients use their functions. Drawing on the growing body of data analytics research of these portals, we aim to develop a taxonomy that applies to a large dataset that covers a wide range of care and services. In doing so, our objectives are to document the functionality of an outpatient portal in the context of ambulatory care provision and provide insights into how patients use these tools.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: Participants will: (1) recognize the multiple dimensions through which portal use can be studied;
(2) understand how to develop and test a taxonomy for in-depth study of patient usage of online portals.
