Description

Healthcare institutions have begun to adopt principles of high reliability organizations (HRO) to eliminate preventable patient harm. HRO transformation requires culture change and development of self-reflecting learning systems that are primarily focused on bedside clinical behaviors. However, few guidelines exist on how HRO paradigms can apply specifically to electronic health record (EHR) use. We identified five interrelated domains that comprise a new framework organizations can leverage when applying HRO principles to the EHR.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: Will be able to outline this five-domain framework for applying high reliability organization (HRO) principles to electronic health record (EHR) use: (1) adapting a culture of safety behaviors to the EHR; (2) recognition that actions in silica directly impact patient outcomes; (3) promoting meaningful documentation; (4) minimizing carry-over of recreational computer habits to the EHR; and (5) integrating safety experts into the EHR optimization process.
