Description

Scheduling in an outpatient infusion therapy clinic is particularly challenging due to varied treatment lengths and limited nurse and infusion chair availability. We developed an optimized scheduling template through use of a mixed integer programming model with the objective of leveling the total number of patients in infusion therapy throughout the day. We implemented this template and have achieved significant operational improvements in patient flow, access, and capacity.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: Participants will learn how an academic medical center applied operations research techniques to improve patient scheduling in an outpatient infusion clinic. This scheduling optimization methodology can be applied broadly across outpatient clinics. Participants will learn both how the mathematical model was developed and how it was successfully implemented in operations.
