Description

Clinical decision support (CDS) systems delivered through the electronic health record (EHR) system are an important part quality and safety initiatives within a healthcare system. However, managing a large CDS knowledge base can be an overwhelming task for informatics teams. Additionally, it can be difficult for these informatics teams to communicate a larger vision as to where they are struggling and how they want to improve. A CDS maturity model can help provide guidance and a roadmap for organizations looking to augment their operational practices. In this interactive panel, we will discuss the origin and development of a proposed maturity model as a framework for CDS, describe four organizations’ approaches to CDS operations, illustrate examples of self-assessment and areas in which organizations have excelled, and facilitate a discussion with the audience about improving CDS effectiveness.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: We believe this panel will be of interest to a wide variety of attendees interested in improving care and reducing work burden using CDS. While the primary message is intended for operational leaders such as CMIO/CHIOs and CNIOs, the discussion will be applicable to any clinician or analyst who participates in the creation, evaluation, and management of CDS at a healthcare organization or as a vendor. While many individuals may participate in specific aspects of decision support (e.g. content build, analytics, or management), this panel will emphasize how the interactions between CDS capacities enable CDS teams to more effectively tailor CDS processes to provide better care with less unnecessary work. We anticipate a lively discussion with attendees about the proposed maturity model’s applicability and utility to different healthcare organizations as well as lessons learned in assessment and advancement of CDS capacities within individual organizations.
