Description
Geisinger Medical Laboratory devised an algorithmic approach to check for various causes of anemia when a clinician orders the reflex test instead of a routine blood test. Preliminary results after implementation suggest improved documentation of anemia as a diagnosis. However, to determine if this approach leads to improved efficiency and improved overall patient outcome without overutilization of the resources, further studies need to be done as clinicians use this more frequently in their practice.

Laboratory assisted reflex algorithmic approach to the diagnosis of anemia may serve as an alternative yet effective tool for the clinicians.
