Description

Patient portals offered on mobile applications provide an opportunity for patients to access health information and tools to manage their health. Mobile applications are suggested to overcome the “digital divide”–encouraging use in populations with limited internet access. Interplay between internet access, mobile technology, and patient engagement through portals is complex; discovering patient characteristics associated with portal use via mobile applications informs how this technology can be implemented to encourage its use across all populations.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: The attendees will be able to identify how patient portal access via mobile application may lead to disparities in use, particularly based on patient characteristics such as geographical location (urban vs. rural), insurance coverage, and employment. Attendees will be encouraged to keep in mind that the “digital divide” remains a barrier to the adoption of patient portals, and not make assumptions about how mobile technology may impact patient populations.
